Itaú Unibanco, one of Brazil’s leading banks, has become the first financial institution in the country to embark on testing connections to SpaceX’s Starlink network. The bank initiated these tests in March at one of its branches located in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, after partnering with SC Caprock, the Brazilian division of the Speedcast group. Speedcast is an authorized Starlink dealer.
The aim of the testing is to assess how this innovative satellite technology could improve internet connectivity standards in areas of Brazil, particularly those situated far from “large urban centers.” Fábio Napoli, the Technology Director at Itaú Unibanco, highlighted the potential of low-orbit satellite connectivity in regions where traditional internet and communications infrastructures are lacking. “With connectivity via low-orbit satellites, our goal is to test how the solution can help us maintain a high-quality connection in regions that are difficult to access through traditional infrastructure,” he stated in a press release.
