Tesla has been a leader in the Electric vehicle market since its inception in 2003. The company has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in the world of Electric vehicles, and its CEO and founder, Elon Musk, is no stranger to controversy. Recently, it was reported that Tesla deliberately inflated the range of their vehicles under a directive from Musk.
The anonymous source who informed Reuters’ report said that Tesla had designed an algorithm that would provide drivers with a “rosy” estimate of how far their vehicle could go without having to recharge its battery. Once a Tesla vehicle’s battery hit the 50 percent mark, those “rosy” estimates would change into a more accurate depiction of how much further the Tesla had to go before needing a charge. “Elon wanted to show good range numbers when fully charged,” the source said.
The reason behind Tesla‘s decision to inflate their range estimates was to combat “range anxiety,” which is a common obstacle for Electric vehicle sales. Showcasing a high driving range would be a positive factor to highlight in a vehicle, and Tesla wanted to make sure that their cars had an impressive range.
Unfortunately, thousands of Tesla customers reported the inaccurate driving range projections that they experienced in their vehicle, concerned that something was wrong with their Car. To address this, Tesla set up a “Diversion Team,” which was tasked with canceling as many of these driving range related service appointments as possible.
It’s clear that Tesla was trying to make their vehicles appear more attractive to potential buyers, but their decision to mislead customers about the range of their cars is a questionable one. The company has already been fined $2.2 million in South Korea for inflated range estimates when driving in cold weather, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has also ordered Tesla to reduce their estimates by 3 percent for six different Car models.
Tesla‘s decision to inflate the range of their vehicles is a reminder that, while the company has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in the world of Electric vehicles, it is still not above criticism. The company should strive to be transparent with its customers in order to maintain their trust.
