Tesla Model Y under investigation for steering wheels falling off

The 2023 Tesla Model Y has been under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) since February 2021 due to steering wheels falling off while owners are driving. The NHTSA is conducting a preliminary investigation into the 2023 model year Model Ys, and the population number is estimated to be around 120,089 vehicles.

The NHTSA is aware of two incidents in which the steering wheel fell off shortly after the delivery of a new Model Y. In both cases, the steering wheel was not attached to the steering column with a retaining bolt, and the only thing holding the wheel on was a friction fit between the steering wheel and column splines. When a significant enough force was applied to overcome the friction fit, the steering wheel detached.

The investigation will focus on identifying the “scope, frequency, and manufacturing processes associated with this condition.” The NHTSA could order a recall of affected products if it deems it necessary after the investigation.

Tesla is taking the issue seriously and has been working to help those affected by the issue. It has been in contact with the owners of the Model Y vehicles and has offered to reimburse them for the cost of the repair. Tesla has also stated that it is taking proactive steps to improve the process by which steering wheels are installed in its vehicles.

The NHTSA has also noted that Tesla has taken proactive steps to improve its quality control processes related to steering wheel installation. Tesla has implemented a number of changes to the process, including additional visual and tactile inspections and checks, as well as improved documentation and communication with the supplier.

The investigation into the 2023 Tesla Model Y is ongoing and the NHTSA is continuing to monitor the situation and evaluate the safety risks associated with the steering wheel issue. It is important to note that, at this point, the NHTSA has not identified any safety risks and no recall has been issued.

The 2023 Tesla Model Y has been a popular model for consumers, and the investigation into the steering wheel issue will likely have an impact on the sales of the model. It is important for consumers to remain aware of the issue and to check with the NHTSA for updates on the investigation and any potential recalls.

It is also important for consumers to be aware that, while the NHTSA is investigating the issue, they should take the necessary precautions while driving the 2023 Tesla Model Y. If owners do experience an issue with the steering wheel, they should contact a Tesla service center or the NHTSA immediately.
